A 3-axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine is a computer-automated manufacturing tool that shapes materials by moving a cutting tool or a workpiece along three linear axes: X, Y, and Z. It is a subtractive manufacturing process, meaning it carves away material from a solid block to create a final part.
- X-Axis (Horizontal): Moves the tool or table left-to-right.
- Y-Axis (Horizontal): Moves the tool or table front-to-back.
- Z-Axis (Vertical): Moves the spindle and cutting tool up-and-down to control depth.
Every standard 3-axis CNC machine relies on three primary systems to execute a job:
The Controller: The “brain” of the machine that reads G-code files and sends electrical signals to the motors.
The Drive System: A combination of stepper or servo motors, linear rails, and ball screws that physically drive the tool along the X, Y, and Z paths.
The Spindle: The motorized component that holds and spins the cutting tool at high speeds (RPM) to drill, carve, or mill the material
