A gantry machine (or gantry mill) is a large-scale CNC milling machine featuring an overhead bridge structure (the gantry) that rides along elevated parallel rails to move the cutting head over a massive work area. It is the industry standard for machining heavy, oversized, and structurally complex components that cannot fit onto traditional machine beds.
Key Operational Characteristics
- Bridge Motion: The overhead bridge moves along the X-axis on parallel side rails, while the cutting head moves across the bridge (Y-axis) and up/down (Z-axis)
- Massive Work Envelope: Because the heavy workpiece does not move, these machines can handle incredibly large, heavy, and long raw materials without losing accuracy.
- Open Floor Setup: The stationary table design allows cranes and forklifts to easily load oversized blocks of metal, composite, or wood directly onto the machine bed.
