A Swiss lathe (also known as a Swiss-type CNC lathe or sliding headstock machine) is a specialized turning center designed to manufacture small, complex, high-precision cylindrical parts with exceptional accuracy.
The defining characteristic of a Swiss lathe is that the raw material moves along the Z-axis while passing through a guide bushing, while the cutting tools remain stationary right next to the bushing. In a conventional lathe, the material is clamped tightly in a chuck and spins in a fixed position, while the cutting tools move down the length of the part. By supporting the material immediately adjacent to the cutting zone, a Swiss lathe eliminates material deflection and vibration, enabling it to hold incredibly tight tolerances on long, thin components.
